Sharing Chocolate Cake

So what has chocolate cake got to do with Maths? It’s a great way to learn about fractions. Year 6/7 students participated in a fun activity this week, using five A3 pieces of paper to model five big chocolate cakes. Place two cakes on one table and three cakes on another. Invite students, one at a time, to choose a place at either table. The aim is to choose the table where you get the most cake, with the cake shared equally between all the people at the table. So the first person chooses the table with three cakes and the second person chooses the table with two cakes. The third person can go to the table with three cakes and get 3/2 of cake, or the table with two cakes and get 2/2 or 1 whole cake. The ‘party’ continues, until all students are seated. Students used their fraction walls and number lines to model fractions and compared fractions, decimals and percentages to consolidate their knowledge.
